Depression is very real, but in most circumstances is a spiritual matter...not a medical problem. Depression is but one result of what happens when the Peace of God is traded for buying into the lies of the world. Greed, lust, hatred, selfishness and unforgiveness are the tell-tale symptoms behind depression.

Modern medicine is not equipped to diagnose or treat spiritual sickness. But since modern medicine is trusted as God by many people (including many Christians), depression is treated as though it were a medical condition.

There is both godly and evil medicine. Medicine from God always heals and never kills. Medicine from hell never heals and can only kill. This is how you can test good medicine from bad.

Drug companies that produce SSRI's are driven by greed and power at the expense of human life. They lie to doctors and the public about their products. They influence politicians and overseers to serve their goals of more money and power.

Man's Methods and God’s Glory

But God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong; and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose [yea] and the things that are not, that he might bring to naught the things that are: that no flesh should glory before God (1 Cor.1:27-29).

God’s methods will always be considered foolish, weak, base and despised by the world and the worldly church.  I inherited from my father a chronic weakness in nasal, sinus, and inner ear infections.  By the time I came to the Lord, my eardrums had burst many times because of these infections.  I dreaded this because it was very painful.  My hearing was impaired due to scars on my eardrums.  Also, like my father, I carried nasal spray with me almost year round to open up my sinuses.  This had destroyed the lining in my nose, which made the problem worse. Because of this, I started using saltwater as a nasal spray, which did not work as good.  Penicillin became useless and vitamin C too.  Shortly after I came to the Lord I discovered that I did not have to seek healing any more because 2000 years ago I was healed by Jesus’ stripes.  I threw my nasal spray and my vitamin C away by faith.  My nose and sinuses have not stopped up since, even when I have had a cold.  I have had no more burst eardrums either.  This testimony has been given to many who also came to faith and were healed.  At the end of all of my works to save myself by mans methods, God gave me faith to see His works.  God’s method was faith in Him combined with my own weakness.  He said, “my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor.12:9).  Faith is foolish, weak, and base to the world but it brings God’s power.

Before I knew the Lord, I applied for a job at Exxon.  Their physical showed that I had hearing loss from scarred eardrums and a non-functional heart murmur, which I had from childhood.  They almost did not hire me.  A few years later after I discovered the Lord and His method, they called me in for another physical.  There was no sign of hearing loss or heart murmur.  My poor attendance record caused by sickness also made a complete turn around.  Worldly methods failed me, but faith in the promises brought the most awesome deliverance.  Glory to God!

Recently, I watched a report on antibacterial soaps on the national news.  They reported that the net effect was that they were not wiping out bacteria, but making it resistant.  What did penicillin do but make antibiotic resistant bacteria for which there is no medical cure on the horizon.  Poisons on the crops to try to destroy the curse go into the water supply and cause a multitude of diseases.  Read your toothpaste tube; fluoride is a deadly poison.  The Journal of the American Medical Association Vol. 284 July 26, 2000 reports that doctors are the third leading cause of death in the US causing 250,000 deaths every year from iatrogenic causes!  Iatrogenic is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy.  Used especially of a complication of treatment.  If this is what their organization admits, what is the truth?  The numbers are much higher.  If, as some believe, this is God’s preferred method of healing today, He is surely making a lot of mistakes.  I have a good doctor friend named John Farmer, who prefers not to use drugs.  He has told me how he prays for patients who will believe, with results.  The problem is that most are not interested in deliverance from their curse if it takes repentance and faith so he does what he can.

My mother took a drug for years.  One day she was reading an article by Reader’s Digest on the side effects of medicines.  The side effect of the drug she was on was breast cancer and glaucoma, and she had them both.  That was a terrible trade.  My father’s favorite doctor told him after an examination, “One thing I am sure of, you are not going to die of a heart attack.  You have the heart of a much younger man.” About a month later, he had a serious heart attack.  I became convinced it was because of a drug he was taking to put oxygen into his blood because he lost a lung to smoking.  Two close friends took a drug that had a side effect of damaging their kidneys.  Their doctors admitted this in both cases.  Man shifts the curse around and some times multiplies it, but he cannot deliver by his own efforts.  If he could, then Jesus’ death was for naught.  I believe it is God’s purpose that we understand that there is no permanent deliverance from the curse except God’s deliverance through Jesus Christ.  The world’s deliverance is a deception, because, ultimately, their gods fail them.  God wants us to see through that.

We have been told that God now uses modern methods for delivering us from the curse.  God’s method is always free.  It is salvation by grace, which is the unmerited, unpaid for, favor of God.  Neither Jesus nor His disciples charged anything for healing, deliverance, or any other form of salvation.  The world’s method always costs.  The poor often go untreated until they die.  In God’s kingdom, all are treated on condition of faith.  God desires to use the same method He used in Scripture, the word of faith, because it is the only one that does not give glory to man.  For instance, if a Christian receives a recovery from some disease while under the care of doctors and medicine, everyone wants to know what the medicine was or who the doctor was.  God will not share His glory with another.  I am not condemning those who use doctors or medicine.  I am offering the good news that Jesus has already healed you almost 2000 years ago.  All we have to do is read the New Testament once to find out that God did not use the methods of man.  In the coming wilderness we will need to understand this.

Soon God’s people will not be able to buy or sell with the world.  Then all will be forced into a wilderness experience where there will be no idolatry with the gods of this world.  For the people of God there will be a great lack of doctors, medicine, lawyers, bankers, psychiatrists, insurance, public assistance of all types, food, clean water, and everything else.  Then we will see God's power in man’s weakness (2 Cor.12:9,10).  The church’s methods of obtaining provision today are the same as the world’s methods and are therefore acceptable to it.

God has a peculiar method for ministering deliverance from the curse that costs nothing, gives no glory to man, and proves His sovereignty.  (1 Cor.1:28) and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, [yea] and the things that are not, that he might bring to naught the things that are: (29) that no flesh should glory before God.  We see here that God chose to use something that does not exist in the physical realm in order to destroy the things that do.  The “things that are not” are the promises in the Word that we do not see fulfilled.  The “things that are” are the cursed things of sin, sickness, and lack, which God wants to “bring to naught.”  For instance, if you are sick, that is a thing that is; but “by whose stripes ye were healed” is a thing that is not in the physical realm.  God chose faith in this promise that is not in order to bring to naught the sickness.  Jesus and the disciples used God’s method for dealing with the curse by “calling the things that are not, as though they were” (Rom.4:17).  They just commanded it done according to the promises.  They did not choose the things that are, like doctors, medicine, psychiatrists, and such to bring to naught the things that are, like sickness, torment, poverty, and such.  The things that appear in this cursed realm are the things that are.  (Heb.11:3) By faith we understand that the worlds have been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen hath not been made out of things which appear.

God’s method is to use the Word and not the physical things that appear, just as in the Gospels and Acts.  In anointing with oil, it is obviously not the oil but the faith that heals.  Oil was just a symbol of the Holy Spirit.  Paul’s handkerchief did not heal; it was the power from his faith (Acts 19:12).  Some might think that once Jesus used things that are when He made clay with His spit to heal a blind man in John 9:6,7.  It was not smearing the clay in his eyes that healed him, but washing it out of his eyes.  Clay symbolizes the Adamic nature and the things that are (Job 10:9;  33:6;  Isa.29:16;  45:9) just as man was made from clay.  In other words, our eyes must be cleansed of seeing through eyes of clay.  We need the spiritual eyes to see the promise as done by faith.  (2 Pet.1:3) seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life (Greek: zoe, “God’s life”) and godliness . . . . To have spiritual eyes, we must see that Jesus has already given us His life and blessings.  We need to be cleansed of fleshly eyes that keep us from God’s blessings.  The natural man (of clay) receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, and he cannot know them because they are spiritually judged (Greek: “examined” or “seen”) (1 Cor.2:14).  By the way, the spit from Jesus mouth symbolizes that which comes out of the mouth of the Lord that gives life to man, the Word or manna (Dt.8:3;  Jn.1:1-3;  6:33,51).

I once knew a preacher who said, “The reason Paul did all those miracles was because Luke the physician was with him.”  Wrong!  Not in one verse do we see Luke using physician skills, which could never result in a miracle.  The Greek word “Iatros” falsely translated “physician” just means “healer.”  “Iatros” is also used of Jesus as “healer.”  Translators put their modern ideas here.  “Physician” means “one who practices medicine,” which Jesus and the apostles never did.  The term used for drugs or medicine in the Greek is “pharmakia” (English: pharmacy) and is translated “witchcraft” or “sorcery,” which Paul called a work of the flesh in Galatians 5:20.  The nations are deceived with pharmakia (Rev.18:23).  Luke was a healer in the same way Jesus and the other disciples were.

It should seem strange to these people that Jesus and his disciples did not use “the things that are” to administer healing or deliverance.  If Paul's handkerchiefs had the power to heal, why could it not heal before he touched it?  It only acted as a medium to carry the healing anointing to the sick by faith.  I have prayed over handkerchiefs, water, or people as mediums and seen healings.  A brother came into our meeting whose wife was very sick.  He was very troubled and on the edge of tears about this.  The brother was not yet convinced that he needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Asking the Lord in my thoughts what to do, it came to me to pray over him to impart healing power to him, which we did.  Then I said, “Now brother, go lay hands on your wife, and she will be healed.”  He was not convinced that healing was our right today; but he went home to lay hands on his wife.  When he did, she was healed; and he came back excited.  You see, it is not the medium; it is the healing power manifested through it, or in this case him, by faith.  Jesus imparted authority to the disciples to heal before they received the Holy Spirit.

So how do we use God's method of “the things that are not”?  By "calling the things that are not as though they were” (Rom.4:17).  In other words, agree with the promise and call it done.  God chooses to use “the things that are not, that he might bring to naught the things that are: that no flesh should glory before God.”(1 Cor.1:28,29).  God does not desire to use man's inventions so that He only can brag.  God's salvation is not by our works.  It is by getting our eyes off the problem and on the promise.  2 Corinthians 4:17,18 teaches that our affliction will be temporary if “we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”  When the Israelites got their eyes off the snake bite (curse) and on the serpent on the pole (Christ who became our curse [Jn.3:14]), they were healed (Num.21:4-9).

The Origin of Medical Practice

A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Theology Ambassador College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Theology

Historians have long been ignorant of the true history of medicine and ITS ORIGIN!  Apparently no one historian has grasped the significance of medicine’s development in a time of worldwide crisis.   Few students of ancient history, if any, have seen the import of the supernatural origin of this craft.  The primary reason for this lack of understanding is the rejection of the Bible as an authoritative record!

The purpose of this thesis is to provide an initial restoration of the History of Medicine.  It is an attempt to establish a more realistic history of the origin of medicine! In effect, this work has THREE MAIN POINTS:  

(1) Modern disease was a common curse in the most ancient times, and as a result, medical practice was a highly advanced art 4000 years ago; 

(2) The Art of Medicine was initiated by one great physician, NIMROD, who was under the influence of a supernatural power;

(3) Medical practice was originated as a SUBTLE PLOT to momentarily relieve mankind of the penalty incurred by sin.

Summary

It has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt that DISEASE is and always has been a universal phenomenon.  Disease is as old as man himself!  The medical profession claims to be the oldest known to man — and with reason, as disease was one of his first major problems. The work of numerous scientists in paleopathology has presented the historian with an amazing picture of ancient diseases. The following diseases were cited:  chronic rheumatism, periostitis, osteomyletis, congenital deformities, all the modern dental ailments, smallpox, bilharzia, plague, tuberculosis, anthracosis, pneumonia, pleurisy, Pott’s disease, spinal meningitis, leprosy, diarrhea, amoebic dysentery, gastro enteritis, cholera, typhoid fever, malaria, gall stones, appendicitis, cirrhosis of the liver, tonsilitis, constipation, and obesity. Even the most modern fatal diseases were found to be common:  heart and vascular failure, infantile paralysis, and cancer. Such a panoply of disease is AMPLE EVIDENCE that people of ancient times suffered physical ailments as we do today! A fully capable medical faculty existed 4000 years ago.  The testimony of history showed the ancient physician to be a professional man able to meet all the contingencies of his practice in the manner of his modern counterpart.

The following advancements of ancient medicine were explained:  pharmacology of Egypt, origin of accurate prescription, ancient anesthetics, bacteriology, surgery, antibiotics, and the CONFIDENCE expressed by doctor and patient alike in this system.

Medicine was a highly advanced art over 4000 years ago! The origin of medical practice was traced through a maze of mythology and secular history to the early rulers of the first civilizations after the flood.  The original great physician proved to be the Biblical NIMROD!  It was through him the “gods” guided the development of that pivotal age in history. Babylon was the recognized center of civilization where the universal pattern for the development of medicine was set.  Nimrod, the first man to exercise world power, wrote numerous volumes on medical subjects.  He is revealed to be the patron deity — indeed, the FATHER OF MEDICINE — to all nations of the world! The major point yet to be explained was WHY the development of medicine was necessary at such an early age.  Medical practice originated as a SUBTLE PLOT to insure the establishment of a separate society.  Medicine proved to be an essential tool supporting in the open opposition to God!

Following the initial rebellion, which led to the building of Babel, disease struck!   This was the natural prophesied result for transgression of God’s laws.  Something had to be done  — and done quickly!  Inspired by Satan, Nimrod initiated the practice of medicine!

Conclusion

Medicine developed as a result of and in conjunction with the REBELLION at Babel!  The purpose for producing a medical practice was to make possible a rebellion which led mankind away from God!  This is THE SIGNIFICANCE, behind the origin of medicine in the early ages, which no secular source has ever grasped! 

Notice again the Biblical warning — the cause for disease:

But it shall come to pass, IF thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and His statutes which I command thee this day; that ALL THESE CURSES SHALL COME UPON THEE, and overtake thee . . . The Lord shall make the PESTILENCE cleave unto thee, until He have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it (Deuteronomy 28:15, 21).

In the face of these dire circumstances, Nimrod and his band of rebels set themselves to oppose God.  Their cause was hopeless and doomed to a failure laced with suffering.  It has been truly said, “There is no length to which man will not go to relieve himself of disease.”  But to no avail!  The records amply demonstrate that the peoples of the ancient world died waging an unending, unsuccessful war against disease  — the same diseases fought today.

The Bible reveals medicine was not and is not the answer to ill health.  “Go up [as did Ahaziah] into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of EGYPT:  in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.”  For “thou HAST NO HEALING MEDICINES”  (Jeremiah 46:11, 30:13).

Considering the origin of medicine and its ancient failure, mankind should reconsider the wisdom in its use today.  Traditionally, medicine has been used and needed by only those in open rebellion to God, those perpetuating the civilization established at Babel.   Those ancient peoples sought protection from God through medicine!  Is man seeking the same protection today?

The Devil's Deception

Bible students everywhere are knowledgeable of the fact that there is a devil and that he is referred to by the Apostle Paul as the god of this world and as the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience.  The story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is well known.  Satan the devil, in the form of the serpent, lied to them.  God had told them that if they were to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they would surely die.  The devil’s words, the first recorded lie, were “Ye shall not surely die.”  The Apostle John records Jesus’ words regarding the devil, “for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44) The devil has been lying to mankind ever since that first encounter with man.  And through his lies he has deceived the whole world.  (Rev. 12:9) Of course, we often feel this applies to everyone but us or our group or organization.  But, the Scripture is very plain; “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world.” We have all swallowed his lies. Often we think the devil’s deception is only in the area of Biblical doctrine.  But, it is in virtually all areas.  The devil will contradict God and often counterfeit His Truth.

It has been said, and is very true, that a deceived person doesn’t know he is deceived.  Most of us, Christians and Bible students included, have been and remain deceived regarding God’s promise of healing.  The devil has done a real number on us.  His lies have been swallowed by us all.  God (“that cannot lie” Titus 1:2) says believers “shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”  The devil tells us that God isn’t healing today as He did in the days of Jesus.  He explains that it is to God’s glory that we remain sick.  He says that we can’t know God’s will regarding healing, or that it once was God’s will to heal but His will has changed.  And, many of us have believed his lies. 

But, the great lie and deception that the Devil has pulled off may be his greatest counterfeit.  He doesn’t want anyone to turn to God and His promises and blessings.  Through his lies and deception he has deceived the whole world into rejecting God’s healing which was made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  He has set up a counterfeit, a source of “healing” that many of us look to and trust in-- doctors and their drugs, medicines, potions and surgeries.  Few truly see the counterfeit.  Many well meaning Bible students and teachers will try to explain how “trusting” God for healing and going to the doctors is compatible.  But, as we have mentioned in other studies, James tells us that we can’t be double minded.  Our faith and trust has to be absolute.  If we doubt, waver and are double minded, saying we “trust” God and yet seek another power such as  medical treatment, we are told by James “ let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.”

Only God can heal.  Healing is the removal, the bearing away of our pain and our diseases, which Jesus Christ did.  It is by His stripes that we are healed.  The Devil doesn’t want us to understand this.  He bombards us with “medical news,” and with commercials for all types of drugs and medicines.  Our society is cared for by the medical professional from before we are born until we die. His counterfeit permeates every aspect of our society and our lives.  Our first thought is to “see the doctor.”  We reach for a pill, or a potion of some sort whenever we have a pain.  Our first thought is not of calling out to God and putting ourselves in His care but to calling 911, getting to the emergency room, seeing the doctor, seeking the “modern medical miracle.” Do these works demonstrate faith in God?

God’s Word, His Scriptures, reveal the devil’s counterfeit to us if we have eyes to see.  The translators have in many places used words and phrases that do not convey clearly what was inspired to be written down for us.  In the book of Revelation, the eighteenth chapter, we read an account of the great fall and destruction of “Babylon the great.”  Ancient Babylon, long ago destroyed, was a city that was full of evil and sin and was totally ungodly.  This modern counterpart, referred to as Babylon the great, appears to be cut from the same cloth.  My intent is not to attempt to identify just who this Babylon the great is.  Some have seen her to be a great Church.  Many feel this is more accurately seen as a system, involving the nations in alliances, commercialization, etc.  But, what I wish to look at is recorded in chapter 18 and verse 23, the last part.  Remember these words are the revelation of Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:1).  He tells us, referring to Babylon the great, “for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.”  We saw earlier that the whole world, “all nations,” are deceived by the Devil.  It is apparent that this Babylon the great is the Devil’s city, nation, church or system.  It is used to deceive all the nations, the whole world.  And, what was it that was used to deceive?  “Thy sorceries.”  In this “modern” age we don’t hear much about sorceries unless it involves Harry Potter or some group of the occult.  But, what is Jesus revealing to us?  The deception is of the whole world, all nations.  I don’t think the occult has become so pervasive that it could be said that it has deceived the whole world.  What we are being told becomes much clearer when we look at the Greek word here translated “sorceries.”

The Greek word used here in Revelation 18:23 and translated “sorceries” is pharmakeia.  The lexicon definitions are “the use or the administering of drugs, poisoning, sorcery, magical arts.” Strong’s Greek Dictionary of the New Testament has the following.  “5331 pharmakeia, from 5332; medication (“pharmacy”), i.e. (by extens.) magic (lit. or fig.):–sorcery, witchcraft.”  “5332 pharmakeus from pharmakon ( a drug, i.e. spellgiving potion ); a druggist (“pharmacist”) or poisoner, i.e. (by extens.) a magician;–sorcerer.”    Notice what Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words has to say about this Greek word.  “Pharmakia (or -eia) (5331) (Eng., ‘pharmacy,” etc.)  Primarily signified ‘the use of medicine, drugs, spells’; then, ‘poisoning’; then ‘sorcery.’” 

Do we begin to see what Jesus is revealing to us?  The Devil’s counterfeit, the whole medical system based around the use and administering of drugs and medicines, permeates all society.  It is not healing but is a counterfeit.  The English word “pharmacy” which is taken from this Greek word is defined as “the art of the preparation, properties, use and effects of drugs.” 

Satan, the Devil, who is responsible for most of the sickness in the first place (Acts 10:38) has designed and developed and spread his counterfeit for God’s blessing of healing throughout the entire world.  And, it is a counterfeit.  The doctors with all of their drugs and medicines can not heal.  The whole medical profession has developed apart from God.  God had no need for drugs, potions, surgeries and the like.  Satan the Devil has deceived the world, the nations, through his counterfeit for healing, the medical system.

The Bible has a bit more to say about this system, it’s sorceries, it’s pharmakeia.  In Revelation the 9th chapter we read of the pouring out of the first of the three “woes.”  Notice, beginning with verse 20, that after a third part of the inhabitants of the world were killed the remaining two thirds “yet repented not.”  Look at what they refused to repent of.  “Of the works of their hands, that they should worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:” Specifically we see that they refuse to repent of their idolatry.  Continuing in verse 21 we see additional things they refused to repent of.  “Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”  Once again, the Greek word translated “sorceries” is pharmakeia.  Not only do they refuse to repent of their idolatry, their murdering and stealing, and their sexual sins, they refuse to repent of their attachment to and reliance upon the medical system.  They hold onto the numerous deceptions of the devil.

Yet, there is more in Scripture concerning this Satanic deception, of rejecting God’s blessing of health and healing and following after medicine and drugs instead.  Almost all of us are familiar with the “works of the flesh” and the “fruit of the Spirit” as given in the 5th chapter of Galatians.  We can probably recite quite a number of the various things mentions as “works of the flesh.”  But, as listed in the King James Version that most of us have used, many aren’t really understood.  Most us of aren’t truly sure what “lasciviousness” or “emulations” are.  Likewise, we have read right over and thought little about the one “work” listed as “witchcraft.”  We picture in our mind’s eye an old hag with a pointy hat riding on a broom, or maybe a group of old women stirring a boiling pot in the dark of the night.  But, what are we being told here in Galatians 5:20?  Once again we find the original Greek word is pharmakeia.  God is telling us, if we have ears to hear, that using and relying upon this Satanic counterfeit for His blessing of healing is a “work of the flesh.” Contrast this with the “fruit of the Spirit” listed a couple of verses later on.  One of the listed things is “faith,” total trust and reliance upon God. When we reject God, and don’t believe and trust Him, we begin looking for an alternative.  And, Satan the devil is eager to oblige us with his counterfeit.  

“Modern medicine” traces it’s roots, not to God, but to ancient Mesopotamia, Babylon, ancient Egypt and then to Greece.  Take an hour or so and go to your public library or spend it on the internet, and read the history of medicine.  The Encyclopedia Britannica has a great deal of information as do other encyclopedias and references. The earliest recorded history is found on clay tablets bearing cuneiform signs and seals that were used by physicians of ancient Mesopotamia.  Many of the tablets that mention early  medical practices have survived from the library of Asshurbanipal, the last great king of Assyria.  This library was housed in the king’s palace at Nineveh, and when the palace was burned by invaders, thousands of clay tablets were baked and thereby preserved by the fire.  Other tablets have been found at other sites.  Many of the tablets are prescriptions but some are viewed as treatises of diagnosis and prognosis.  

I’d like to quote a section from an article entitled “Medicine in Ancient Mesopotamia.”  (This article was found on an Indiana University internet site, http://viator.ucs.indiana.edu/~ancmed/meso.htm)  “In fact, as recent research is showing, the descriptions of diseases contained in the diagnostic treatise demonstrate a keen ability to observe and are usually astute.  Virtually all expected diseases can be found described in parts of the diagnostic treatise, when those parts are fully preserved, as they are for neurology, fevers, worms and flukes, VD and skin lesions.  The medical texts are, moreover, essentially rational, and some of the treatments, as for example those designed for excessive bleeding, are essentially the same as modern treatments for the same condition.”  In the concluding thoughts in this article the author states, “While many of the basic tenants of medicine, such as bandaging and the collection of medical texts, began in Mesopotamia, other cultures may have developed these practices independently.”  The final statement, “It was Egyptian medicine that seems to have had the most influence on the later development of medicine, through the medium of the Greeks.”

Quoting from the Encyclopedia Britannica, article History of Medicine; “When the medicine of ancient Egypt is examined, the picture becomes clearer.  The first physician to emerge is Imhotep, chief minister to King Djoser in the 3rd millennium BC, who designed one of the earliest pyramids, the Step Pyramid at Saqqarah, and who was later regarded as the Egyptian god of medicine and identified with the Greek god Asclepius.”    We find later in this same piece some information on this Asclepius.  “Two characters, the military surgeons Podaleirius and Machaon, are said to have been the sons of Asclepius, the god of medicine.  The divine Asclepius may have originated in a human Asclepius who lived about 1200 BC and is said to have performed many miracles of healing.”  The next paragraph continues, “Asclepius was worshiped in hundreds of temples throughout Greece, the remains of which may still be seen at Epidaurus, Cos, Athens, and elsewhere.”

The Greek Hippocrates, who was born in Cos (or Kos) in 460 BC, is regarded as the “father of Western medicine”.  His “Hippocratic Oath” has been taken by doctors for hundreds of years, supposedly as an ethical guideline.  However, read the first line of what has been sworn to by thousands and thousands of doctors over the years.  “I swear by Apollo the physician, and Aesculapius, and Hygeia, and Panacea, and all the gods and goddesses,...”   (The balance of this oath can be found in numerous encyclopedias and on numerous internet web sites.) 

It is quite apparent that there is no knowledge of or inspiration from the True God of the Bible.  He tells us, first of all, to NOT SWEAR.  I find it interesting that James tells us this, just two verse before he gives us instruction to call for the elders if we are sick.  Notice, “But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.”  (James 5:12) This is very important in God’s eyes.  James was inspired to say “but above all things.”

Hippocrates’ oath was to swear by four specific Greek gods and goddesses, AND then by “all the gods and goddesses.”  And, the Greeks had many.  In the account in Acts 17 Paul found that Athens was “wholly given to idolatry.”  They had an idol to every god and goddess plus one to “the unknown god.”  Paul declared the True God to them.

The specific gods and goddesses Hippocrates mentions are the ones that had to do with medicine, etc.  Apollo (Apollon) was the god of both the plague and of healing, of music, archery, and prophecy.  Aesculapius (Asclepius or Asklepios) was the god of medicine and healing.  One of his five daughters was Hygeia, the personification of health.  Panacea was the goddess of healing.  Isn’t it interesting that we use her name to mean a remedy for all disease or ills, a cure-all.

Aesculapius (Asclepius or Asklepios) had as his symbols snakes twined around a staff, crowns or laurels and pine cones.  Where have we seen snakes twined around a staff?  (Probably most recently on the ambulance you saw on the street.)  The following is a quote from the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia found at infoplease.com.  “caduceus, wing-topped staff, with two snakes winding about it, carried by Hermes, given to him (according to one legend) by Apollo.  The symbol of two intertwined snakes appeared early in Babylonia and is related to other serpent symbols of fertility, wisdom, and healing, and of sun gods.  This staff of Hermes was carried by Greek heralds and ambassadors and became a Roman symbol for truce, neutrality, and noncombatant status.  By regulation, it has since 1902 been the insignia of the medical branch of the U.S. Army.  The caduceus is much used as a symbol of commerce, postal service, and ambassadorial positions and since the 16th cent. has largely replaced the one-snake symbol of Asclepius as a symbol of medicine.”

I would encourage everyone to study further about the origins of the medical system and its emergence from paganism/idolatry.  But, from these brief quotations and references it seems very plain that the medical system’s origin and various accouterments came, not from the True God of the Bible, but from the god of this world and his pagan religions. God did not give His people a medical system and physicians.  He revealed Himself as Yhvh Rapha, their God of health and healing.  Instead He gave them a priesthood to continually teach them of Him, His words and His commandments, which if adhered to would result in none of the diseases of Egypt being put upon them.

As Jesus revealed through John, the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, has deceived the whole world, all nations and peoples.  We need to be studying further the Word of God regarding faith, healing and idolatry and come out of deception.  

What will we do with this knowledge, this understanding, this Biblical Truth?  Remember the words of the Apostle Paul, following the listing of the works of the flesh in Galatians chapter 5.  “They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”  Also, keep in mind the voice John heard from heaven following the angel’s cry regarding Babylon the great being fallen.  What that voice spoke is recorded for us, you and me, in Revelation 18:4, “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”

Iatros means physician in Greek, and -genic, meaning induced by, is derived from the International Scientific Vocabulary. Combined, of course, they become iatrogenic, meaning physician-induced. Iatrogenic disease is obviously, then, disease which is caused by a physician.

Iatrogenic Disease

Because secular medicine depends so heavily on the use of toxic drugs, surgery and radiation in treatment, the medical industry has found itself facing many complications, one of which is iatrogenics. “Iatros” is Greek for “physician,” and “genic” is Greek for “caused by."

In other words, iatrogenic disease is a disease, sickness, impairment, disfigurement, or death caused by the practice of “acceptable” medical care (excluding malpractice or other medical mistakes). The problem of iatrogenics is not a fluke. Within the world of modern medicine it has reached epidemic proportions.

It is incredulous to think that trained, qualified, medical doctors would be responsible for causing death. But consider the following: In 1973, doctors in Israel went on strike, reducing their daily patient contact from 65,000 to 7,000. This strike lasted one month. According to the Jerusalem Burial Society, the Israeli death rate dropped 50 percent during that same month.1 There had not been such a profound decrease in mortality since the last doctors’ strike twenty years before.

In 1976, in Columbia, doctors went on strike for fifty-two days, and the death rate dropped 35 percent.2

In Los Angeles County, in 1976, doctors went on a work slow-down to protest soaring malpractice insurance premiums. This coincided with an 18 percent drop in the death rate.3

Incredible, but true! Life expectancy actually increases when doctors are absent, because of iatrogenics.

The effects of iatrogenic diseases are cumulative and self-perpetuating. In an effort to extricate himself from complications of diagnosis and therapy, the physician may compound the problem with his patient by having to employ maneuvers that are in themselves risky.4

For example, many iatrogenic complications require specific treatment, thus exposing that patient to the possibility of yet another iatrogenic disease. A patient may experience an iatrogenic complication from a diagnostic test which was required to diagnose the initial iatrogenic disease. The situation in which an iatrogenic activity provokes a second iatrogenic complication is termed second level iatrogenesis. In a hospital setting these situations are not uncommon. It is even possible for third and fourth level iatrogenesis to occur.5

“Every drug administered, every diagnostic test performed, every operative procedure entered into, carries with it the risk of iatrogenic complications. The more medication, tests, and operations a patient experiences, the more likely he or she is to develop an iatrogenic disease. Because of the present fragmentation of medical care, with each sub-specialist looking after his own particular organ system, the total risk to which the patient is exposed is often forgotten.”6

How bad is the problem? Well, according a report issued by JAMA (Journal of The American Medical Association), a total of 225,000 deaths per year occur from iatrogenic causes!7

Barbara Starfield, M.D., of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, author of the report, breaks down the death count this way:

12,000 - from unnecessary surgery8
7,000 - from medication errors in hospitals9
20,000 - from other errors in hospitals10
80,000 - from infections in hospitals11
106,000 - from non-error, negative effects of drugs12

Collectively, the 225,000 iatrogenic (doctor caused) deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer.

The underlying problem of iatrogenesis lies at the very nature of modern medicine itself. Modern medicine does not function to heal the chronically ill or to find and eradicate the root cause of disease. Rather, it operates under a philosophy to treat the symptoms of disease. Under this system of medicine, treatment, not healing, becomes the priority. This is why the pharmaceutical drug industry has found such a large customer base in modern medicine and courts it the way it does.

Blindly led, deluded, and thinking they will find healing, millions of chronically ill people opt for the attention of modern secular medicine but instead find only suffering and death. This is not to say, however, that all modern medicine is demonic or bad.

In the case of trauma or emergency care medicine, modern medicine, has become a life-saver for millions. Emergency care medical units can be found at virtually any U.S. hospital. The work performed by the doctors and nurses in these units is to be applauded. They deal with victims of all manner of accidents (car, industrial, farm, home, etc.).

However, the size of this specialty is small compared to the overall general practice of modern medicine, which treats symptoms of disease rather than diagnose and deal with the root cause of those symptoms.

Have you noticed the many ER (emergency room) shows on television? These programs serve to point out the life-saving skills of trauma personnel and the medical technology they use to save lives.

Have you also noticed the lack of television shows that deal with the medicine of chronic illness? There is a reason why such shows dealing with chronic illness are few to none. Secular medicine cannot withstand the scrutiny such a show would expose.

When you consider that doctors represent the third leading cause of death, it is no wonder that more and more physicians and other medical professionals are becoming increasingly disillusioned with their own profession. And rightfully so. Physicians have an age-old tradition for healing, not suffering and death.

What has happened to this once-honorable profession?

Satan has control of it. The original Hippocratic Oath, which required physicians to swear to do no harm and to practice his or her craft with purity and with holiness, no longer exists today. It has been replaced by a demonic oath, void of any holiness or omitted altogether.

I will not delve into the reason why this has occurred in this article. But a large record exists of exactly what happened. In a nutshell, the pharmaceutical industry took control of the hospitals, universities, research and other institutions across the land, both here in America and abroad. The result is that our once-honorable, holy form of medicine (void of toxic poisons, risky surgery, and dangerous radiation) now aligns itself with the powerful pharmaceutical industry.

As we know it today, a vast segment of modern medicine has become a god unto itself, completely void of any interest in healing. Iatrogenics is but one side effect of this ungodly form of medicine.

Doctors Are The Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 250,000 Deaths Every Year

This week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is the best article I have ever seen written in the published literature documenting the tragedy of the traditional medical paradigm.

This information is a followup of the Institute of Medicine report which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she describes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR:
* 12,000 — unnecessary surgery 8
* 7,000 — medication errors in hospitals 9
* 20,000 — other errors in hospitals 10
* 80,000 — infections in hospitals 10
* 106,000 — non-error, negative effects of drugs 2
* These total to 250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!!

What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment.

Dr. Starfield offers several warnings in interpreting these numbers:
* First, most of the data are derived from studies in hospitalized patients.
* Second, these estimates are for deaths only and do not include negative effects that are associated with disability or discomfort.
* Third, the estimates of death due to error are lower than those in the IOM report.

If the higher estimates are used, the deaths due to iatrogenic causes would range from 230,000 to 284,000. In any case, 225,000 deaths per year constitutes the third leading cause of death in the United States, after deaths from heart disease and cancer. Even if these figures are overestimated, there is a wide margin between these numbers of deaths and the next leading cause of death (cerebrovascular disease).

Another analysis (11) concluded that between 4% and 18% of consecutive patients experience negative effects in outpatient settings, with:
* 116 million extra physician visits
* 77 million extra prescriptions
* 17 million emergency department visits
* 8 million hospitalizations
* 3 million long-term admissions
* 199,000 additional deaths
* $77 billion in extra costs

The high cost of the health care system is considered to be a deficit, but seems to be tolerated under the assumption that better health results from more expensive care.

However, evidence from a few studies indicates that as many as 20% to 30% of patients receive inappropriate care.

An estimated 44,000 to 98,000 among them die each year as a result of medical errors.2

Can You Really Trust Psychology?

These chapters level another devastating argument against psychologists who are Christians in general and Dr. Gary Collins in particular. The argument is thorough, as it counters psychology on its basis as science, its claim to truth, its integration with Scripture, its being religion, its effectiveness, and its humanism (self-centeredness). While I have some familiarity with the psychological literature, the amount of research against psychology is amazing and from people in their own camps. It is fascinating that while the federal government is willing to subsidize almost anything today (except conservative Christians), there is insufficient evidence of efficacy for a Senate subcommittee to “justify public support” of psychology (Chapter 5).

I find the supposed attempt at the “integration” of psychology with Scripture to be the most arrogant and serious claim of Collins and others. With all the warnings in Scripture of “being in the world, but not of the world” and the separation of God’s truth from all other claims represented as darkness and light, the impossibility of integration of avowedly pagan psychologists with Scripture seems obvious. One begins to wonder whether these promoters of psychology have any biblical discernment.

In fact, discernment seems to be exactly what Christians most want to avoid these days. For all the focus on spiritual gifts over the past decade, how often does any organization seek those with discernment? Evangelists, teachers, seminar leaders, and those with the gift of “helps” are actively sought, but few seek the prophets to discern truth and error. Modern Christians treat those with discernment no better than the prophets of the Old Testament. They are not stoned, but they are effectively isolated from key positions and from most Christian publishers.

With so many concepts contrary to Scripture and all the arguments against psychology, one wonders why it continues to be so widely accepted among conservative Christians. The only conclusion seems to be that psychological concepts appeal to man’s sin nature. Why else would Christians choose a way that was contrary to God’s way? Indeed, Adam and Eve were enticed away from God by Satan’s lie that they would be “like God.” Ironically, the concept of “self-esteem” that is advocated by so many Christians in psychology is consistent with this sinful appeal.

Psychologists who are Christians are not primarily at fault. Church leaders must bear the guilt of the invasion of psychology into the church. These are the people who are ordained of God to guard the minds of their sheep. Instead, they have invited wolves into the fold. Christian publishers are guilty as well. The “profit margin” has become the most important consideration for them. In reality Christian publishing ought to be under the authority of the church, so even in this area church leaders are at fault.

No greater issue faces the modern, true church than this Trojan horse of psychology. It has a stranglehold that will not be easily loosened. I applaud the scholarly efforts herein along with the few others who attempt to free the church of the religion of psychology.

Scientific Facade.
If the type of psychology we are discussing does not meet the rigors of scientific inquiry and yet continues to claim scientific status, we must wonder if it is indeed pseudoscience. The dictionary definition of pseudoscience certainly seems to fit: “a system of theories, assumptions, and methods erroneously regarded as scientific.”20 Pseudoscience or pseudoscientism uses the scientific label to protect and promote opinions which are neither provable nor refutable.

Numerous critics in the field recognize the pseudoscientific nature of psychotherapy. In his book The Powers of Psychiatry, psychiatrist-lawyer Jonas Robitscher, says this about psychiatrists in general: His advice is followed because he is a psychiatrist, even though the scientific validity of his advice and recommendations has never been firmly established.21 He further states, “The infuriating quality of psychiatrists is . . . their insistence that they are scientific and correct and that their detractors, therefore, must be wrong.” 22 Research psychiatrist E. Fuller Torrey’s words are even more blunt: The techniques used by Western psychiatrists are, with few exceptions, on exactly the same scientific plane as the techniques used by witch doctors.23

The Bible is full of explanations of why people behave the way they do and how they change. Beginning with Genesis, God demonstrated the basic problem of mankind: separation from God through sin. And, God provided the only lasting remedy for change: a restored relationship with God by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus. A person’s separation from God or his active relationship with God will affect every attitude, every choice, and every action. The study of mankind from any other perspective will bring about a distorted view. Although we can observe, record and report external aspects of human nature, we must turn to Scripture for explanations of why people behave the way they do and how they can change. Every other explanation must be fully in agreement with Scripture to be accurate.

Psychology deals with the very same areas of concern already dealt with in Scripture. Explanations of why people behave the way they do and how they change have concerned philosophers, theologians, cultists, and occultists throughout the centuries. Since God has given an Instruction Book on how to live, all ideas about the why’s of behavior and the how’s of change must be viewed as religious in nature. Whereas the Bible claims divine revelation, psychotherapy claims scientific substantiation. Nevertheless, when it comes to behavior and attitudes and morals and values, we are dealing with religion, either the Christian faith or any one of a number of other religions including that of secular humanism.

Psychotherapy fits more reasonably into the category of religion than into the field of science. Those who look at psychotherapy from an analytical, research point of view have long suspected the religious nature of psychotherapy. Psychiatrist Jerome Frank says that “psychotherapy is not primarily an applied science. In some ways it more resembles a religion.”1

Many who practice psychotherapy embrace its religious aspects. According to Victor Von Weizsaecker, “C. G. Jung was the first to understand that psychoanalysis belonged in the sphere of religion.”2 Jung himself wrote: Religions are systems of healing for psychic illness. . . . That is why patients force the psychotherapist into the role of a priest, and expect and demand of him that he shall free them from their distress. That is why we psychotherapists must occupy ourselves with problems which, strictly speaking, belong to the theologian.3

Note that Jung used the word religions rather than Christianity. Jung himself had repudiated Christianity and explored other forms of religious experience, including the occult. Without throwing out the religious nature of man, Jung dispensed with the God of the Bible and assumed his own role as priest.

ROOTS OF RELIGIOUS ALTERNATIVES.
From its very beginning psychological theories and methods of counseling created doubt about Christianity. Each great innovator of psychological theories sought an understanding about mankind apart from the revealed Word of God. Each created an unbiblical system to explain the nature of man and to bring about change. Men like Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) and Carl Jung (1875-1961) eroded confidence in Christianity and established systems in direct opposition to the Word of God. Occultism, atheism, and antagonism towards Christianity were disguised by psychological, scientific sounding language.

Sigmund Freud reduced religious beliefs to illusions and called religion “the obsessional neurosis of humanity.”4 Jung, an early follower of Freud, however, viewed all religions as collective mythologies. He did not believe they were real in essence, but that they could affect the human personality. While Freud viewed religion as the source of mental problems, Jung believed that religion was a solution. Freud argued that religions are delusionary and therefore evil. Jung, on the other hand, contended that all religions are imaginary but good. Both positions are anti-Christian. One denies Christianity and the other mythologizes it.

Religious bias colored the psychological systems of both Freud and Jung. They were not dealing with science, but with values, attitudes, and behavior. And because they were working in areas about which the Bible gives the authoritative Word of God, they were developing antibiblical religions. Jay Adams says: Because of the teaching of the Scriptures, one is forced to conclude that much of clinical and counseling psychology, as well as most of psychiatry, has been carried on without license from God and in autonomous rebellion against Him. This was inevitable because the Word of the sovereign God of creation has been ignored. In that Word are “all things pertaining to life and godliness.” By it the man of God “may be fully equipped for every good work.” And it is that Word—and only that Word—that can tell a poor sinner how to love God with all of the heart, and mind, and soul, and how to love a neighbor with the same depth of concern that he exhibits toward himself.5

Professor of psychiatry and author Thomas Szasz contends, “The popular image of Freud as an enlightened, emancipated, irreligious person who, with the aid of psychoanalysis, ‘discovered’ that religion is a mental illness is pure fiction.”6 He says, “One of Freud’s most powerful motives in life was the desire to inflict vengeance on Christianity for its traditional anti-Semitism.”7 Freud used scientific-sounding language to disguise his hostility towards religion. However, Szasz declares, “There is, in short, nothing scientific about Freud’s hostility to established religion, though he tries hard to pretend that there is.” Freud was not an objective observer of humanity, nor was he an objective observer of religion.

While Freud grew up in a Jewish home, Jung’s father was a Protestant minister. Jung’s description of his early experience with Holy Communion reveals his disappointment with
Christianity. He wrote: Slowly I came to understand that this communion had been a fatal experience for me. It had proved hollow; more than that it had proved to be a total loss. I knew that I would never again be able to participate in this ceremony. “Why, that is not religion at all,” I thought. “It is an absence of God; the church is a place I should not go to. It is not life which is there, but death.”8

This significant experience could have led Jung to deny all religions as Freud did, but he did not. For him all religions were myths which contained some truth about the human psyche. For him, psychoanalysis was a religious activity. And, since all religions held some elements about truth, he denied the authority of Scripture and the exclusive claim of Jesus Christ to be the only way of salvation.

Carl Jung repudiated Christianity and became involved in idolatry. He renamed and replaced everything Christian and everything biblical with his own mythology of archetypes. And as he moved in his own sphere of idolatry, the archetypes took form and served him as familiar spirits. He even had his own personal familiar spirit by the name of Philemon. He also participated in the occultic practice of necromancy.9 Jung’s teachings serve to mythologize Scripture and reduce the basic doctrines of the faith into esoteric gnosticism.

Rather than objective observation and scientific discovery, Freud and Jung each turned his own experience into a new belief system and called it psychoanalysis. Freud attempted to destroy the spirituality of man by reducing religion to illusion and neurosis. Jung attempted to debase the spirituality of man by presenting all religion as mythology and fantasy. Repudiating the God of the Bible, both Freud and Jung led their followers in the quest for alternative understandings of mankind and alternative solutions to problems of living. They turned inward to their own limited imaginations and viewed their subjects from their own anti-Christian subjectivity.
Because they rest on different foundations, move in contrasting directions, and rely on opposing belief systems, psychotherapy and Christianity are not now, nor were they ever, natural companions in helping individuals. The faith once delivered to the saints was displaced by a substitute faith, often disguised as medicine or science, but based upon foundations which are in direct contradiction to the Bible.

Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen indicates the impetus psychology received from those who sought to repudiate Christianity by saying, “It appears that certain of the most influential pioneers in American psychology found in it an ideal vehicle for renouncing their own Christian upbringing in the name of science.”10

Carl Rogers is another example of one of those influential pioneers. While attending Union Theological Seminary, he and some of his fellow classmates “thought themselves right out of religious work.”11 He did not find what he was looking for in Christianity and thus turned away from his Christian upbringing and Christian calling.12 Carl Rogers renounced Christianity and became one of the most respected leaders of humanistic psychology. He confessed, “I could not work in a field where I would be required to believe in some specified religious doctrine.”13

Psychology was attractive to him since he was interested in the “questions as to the meaning of life,” but did not want to be restricted by the doctrines of Christianity.14 Not only did Carl Rogers embrace another religion, secular humanism; he later turned to the occult. Rogers engaged in the forbidden practice of necromancy, which is communication with the dead through a medium.15 What does a man who has repudiated Christianity have to offer the church about how to live?

From its inception, psychotherapy was developed as an alternative means of healing and help, not as an addition or complement to Christianity. It is not only a substitute method of helping troubled souls; it is a surrogate religion. Szasz contends: Contrition, confession, prayer, faith, inner resolution, and countless other elements are expropriated and renamed as psychotherapy; whereas certain observances, rituals, taboos, and other elements of religion are demeaned and destroyed as symptoms of neurotic or psychotic “illness.”16

Should Christians Go To Psychiatrists?

Psalm 1:1 says “Blessed is the man that walketh NOT in the COUNSEL OF THE UNGODLY…” Colossians 2:8, "BEWARE lest any man spoil you through PHILOSOPHY and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world and NOT after Christ."

Psychiatrists don’t take Satan or sin into account in their work. They train in heathen, godless universities where the Bible is laughed at and rejected. Psychiatrists and psychologists have replaced the word “SIN” with words such as "disease, dysfunction and addiction." The Bible speaks of “SIN” as the real problem and gives the answer.

"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the REDEMPTION THAT IS IN CHRIST” (Romans 3:23-26).

So the answer is in Christ Jesus! We read in I Peter 5:8...

“...YOUR ADVERSARY THE DEVIL, as a roaring lion, walketh about, SEEKING WHOM HE MAY DEVOUR:"

Satan is real, my friend and he’s out to get you! He hates you immensely. Your only protection is to become a born-again believer and then “SUBMIT yourselves therefore TO GOD. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Notice that you must “submit to God first." Submit to the truth! Jesus said “ye shall know the truth, and THE TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE” (John 8:32). “...thy Word is TRUTH” (John 17:17).

The Root Problem with Psychiatry

The big problem with going to an unsaved psychiatrist is that they're not trained upon Biblical principles. "Drugs" and "coping sessions" are the means by which they try to cure people. They're trained upon the worldly principles of evolution and humanism. Increasingly, psychologists today are using New Age witchcraft--yoga, astrology, etc.

God's Word + Psychology = Psychoheresy

So-called "Christian" psychology is no better. The problem of sin is never addressed. The plan of salvation is never offered. The Person of Jesus Christ is never introduced. It's disheartening as a Christian, to know that so many so-called "Christian" organizations never preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Folks, hell is real! People are plundering into hell by the tens-of-thousands every day. Even so-called "Christian psychologists" are bad news. Listen friend, you can go to all the shrinks you want to but you'll never have a sound mind until you get God into your life, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a SOUND MIND." (2 Timothy 1:7). A "sound mind" comes from God!!!

We are NOT all children of God. Only those who realize their sinful condition and turn to Christ in faith for the forgiveness of those sins are God's children. Only those who believe that Jesus died, was buried and rose again three days later can become God's children. Only those who believe that Jesus Christ is God Almighty are God's children. It is a Satanic lie to teach that all people are God's children--I wish it were so, but the Bible says it is NOT. I triple-dog dare you to ask the average person who claims to be a Christian if they believe that Jesus is Almighty God. You will find as I did that most professed "Christians" are not really saved. You must get saved friend if you want true lasting peace. You will never have peace until you accept Jesus into your heart as your personal Savior, "There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked." (Isaiah 48:22).

Your probably Not As Crazy As You Think You Are

It’s been said that Christians at best are people, and people at best are sinners. It's also been said that if you think your going crazy, it's a good sign your not. Crazy people don't usually think their crazy. I once knew a teacher who had an outgoing personality. He would always kid around and make people laugh. I once jokingly told him he was crazy. I'll never forget his reply--He said, "Yes, I'm a little crazy, but not insane; the way you keep from going insane is by being a little crazy." I think he had a good point there. I used to hear people say, "You can't take life too seriously." I had no idea what they were talking about. Life is very serious, how can you not take it seriously? As I grew older and started having heavier burdens of my own, I realized that I had to either let some things go or else I wasn't going to make it. Let go, Let God. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do about some things in life. It is these things that we must let go and place into the Lord's hands.

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6).

Sometimes we understand "why?" something is happening in our life; however, sometimes we do not. There are two types of peace: once peace is "peace within understanding" where we know "why?" something is going on in our life. There is also a "peace which passes all understanding" where we have no idea "why?" something is happening but we trust in God anyhow. Friend, when you can't see the hand of God, trust the heart of God. You'll notice that "God" is not mentioned even one time in the book of Esther, yet we see the power of God at work. When you can't see your hand in front of your face, cast your cares upon God in prayer and claim God's peace which PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING. You can always have peace dear friend, simply trust upon the Lord. Put your problems into the Lord's Hands and wait on God.

Humans are Creatures of Emotion

God only had ONE Son without sin, but he never had a son without trial and tribulation. We humans are creatures of emotion. God gave us (as human beings) the capacity to cry, laugh, fear, mourn, anger, rejoice, etc. These are NORMAL experiences of life; however, these emotions may become “overwhelming” at times and so help is needed. It is a shame that people have to hide their natural feelings. I spoke with one woman who said her supervisor at work forced her to go for counseling because she came to work crying. There are commercials on TV asking people if they have any of the following depression symptoms: feeling tired, worn out, stressful, fatigued, irritable, insomnia, headaches, feeling like crying for no reason, etc. Folks, this describes 90% of the working population. People that work for a living experience all of these things naturally. We all feel burned out sometimes. Often, it's the people who try the hardest to make a better life that face the greatest setbacks. Nevertheless, we all have problems and emotions. This does NOT means there is something wrong with us. We need to learn how to deal with life...from the Bible.

Legal Drug Dealers

The medical industry (in my humble opinion) exploits people. Way too many people are taking drugs which they do not need. A drug for this, and a drug for that. Not to mention the negligence--A doctor once prescribed over 90 pills to me because he thought I had the flu. I started to take the pills but then went to another doctor when they weren't working after a few days. It turned out I just has sinuses. We need to be careful is what I am saying. The Bible teaches that humans are by nature like sheep, we are gullible. We must not do something simply because someone tells us to do it. Very few people know about "homeopathic" doctors which offer "natural cures" for many so-called "incurable" conditions. There are many alternatives to drugs, but you'll never hear about them from your doctor or the drug companies. The whole drug industry is a big money-making scam!

Testimony of Divine Healing - Pastor Eugene Hoe of Melbourne was healed from infective endocarditis

It was a phone call I never want to receive again. My uncle, who had taken my husband, Eugene Hoe, to the doctor to get an MC, had been advised to immediately take Eugene to the hospital. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever imagined that Eugene would be in a hospital! He was suspected to be down with meningococcal meningitis and, my uncle told me, had been taken to the hospital "just in time".

I knew this could not have been so because I had been praying for him all night.

A couple of days earlier, when Eugene had bruises on his arms and legs, I had phoned mum (Pastor Jean Lim) in Malaysia. I had told her that I felt the Lord reminding me of the time when she was sleeping in the night and I heard her proclaiming the name of Jesus and commanding the enemy to leave in Jesus' name. The next morning, when I asked her what happened, she had said that she had literally felt the enemy attacking her and pulling her legs. Then we had noticed that there were bruises on her legs. 

The bruises that Eugene had were similar to mum's. I knew then that the spiritual warfare was especially intense because we had been praying for Melbourne and preparing for the Jesus Heals miracle services and for the TRANSFORMING GLORY 2 Prayer Retreat.

Now Eugene was at the hospital and all I could think of was how to get him out of there. I rang mum and she suggested that I get one of our prayer partners to come with me to the hospital. As we were praying on the way there, I really felt I should pray what Jesus had prayed:

He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will." (Matt 26:39)

I am not exaggerating when I say that I literally felt what I think could have been the intensity that Jesus felt when He asked that the cup be passed from Him. I knew that the Lord could take this all away in an instant, but He had His plans for Eugene. 

The other verse that struck me was, "For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God." (Ex 20:5)

All I wanted was that only God would be glorified in all of this, but if Eugene was going to be in the hospital, I did not know how God was going to get ALL the glory. There would be people who were bound to say that he had been healed by the doctors and the medication instead of by God. 

When we arrived at the hospital, Eugene was already in ICU. He was on drips and tubes were everywhere. He had to be isolated for 24 hours because meningococcal meningitis is contagious. There was no way I could take Eugene out of the hospital then . 

We were even advised to be immunised because we had been in close contact with Eugene. The Health Department informed Eugene's office about his situation and advised anyone who was concerned and who had come into contact with Eugene to be immunised. That was how serious the situation was. 

This was my first time in an ICU. As I walked in, my heart was just filled with compassion for all the people there. There was no joy, no smiles. People were sullen and serious. We met the parents of a teenage girl diagnosed to have this same meningitis. She had been in a coma for a week already. I felt that God wanted me to witness this so that I could have a heart of compassion for people who are going through a life-threatening crisis. 

I went home that night, praying that when I returned in the morning, I could take Eugene home.

Eugene looked better the next day. I was very hopeful that I could discharge him. Even the nurses said that he was stable. Then came the bombshell. One of the doctors had ordered a check on Eugene's heart and discovered a bacterial infection about 2cm long on his heart valve. They suggested transferring Eugene to a hospital better equipped for performing surgery to remove the bacteria and see how much damage had been done to the mitral valve. And they were thinking of doing this in the next day or two after consulting with the surgeons. 

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. One of the doctors from our church came to visit and I asked him if the hospital would operate on Eugene without our permission. He said that if there was the possibility of death occurring within a few minutes, they would go ahead with the surgery even if there were no family members present to give consent. I knew then that we had to have someone with Eugene round-the-clock, to pray and intercede on his behalf, and also to prevent any surgery from taking place. Not wanting to cause much of a scene, I prayed that the Lord would give us a window of time during which we could pray and have Eugene walk out of the hospital without surgery.

Our children had not seen Eugene for almost two days and we felt that it was now time for them to visit him. This was a challenge because I had to prepare the children emotionally for the shock of seeing their daddy with drips and tubes. I also had to prepare their daddy to be strong for his children. 

Praise God. There were tears but the Lord gave strength to both daddy and the children. It was a scary and shocking time for the children but it gave them the resolve to pray for their daddy even more and to trust God to bring him out of the hospital. Every day, their prayer was for the Lord to bring Eugene out of the hospital. Every morning, they asked if they would come home from school and see their daddy at home. Believe me, they knew the gravity of the situation, BUT I praise God for their simple faith and trust in God. To them, it was an easy task for God. All they had to do was to ask and believe.

Everyone at church was so relieved when mum and some of the intercessors from Malaysia arrived. Mum went to the hospital two hours after landing in Melbourne. I praise God for mum's arrival but I knew that as Eugene's wife, I myself had to have the faith to believe that God was going to heal Eugene. I thank God that I had been brought up in a faith-filled atmosphere. This was definitely the key for me. 

I knew that there have been families who believed God for divine healing, but did not receive and became disappointed with God. But I just knew that God is a God Who never fails. Things happen that we cannot explain but if we ask of God and believe not only with our mouth (confession) but truly with our whole heart (not wavering, not letting the slightest doubt come in), God can and will answer. God is only waiting to be asked. Indeed, God does deserve to have all the glory.

We faced a challenge over the next few days as we were not allowed to bring Eugene home. The doctors were frustrated at having to postpone the surgery for another day or two because we refused to give consent for surgery. We kept on praying and having at least one person with Eugene at all times to worship, pray and intercede. 

Then, after lots of tests, they discovered that bits of the bacteria had broken off, gone into the bloodstream and deposited itself in various parts of Eugene's body. His lungs, kidneys and spleen were affected. He was also having pains in his stomach. Bits of the bacteria traveled to Eugene's brain and caused him to have three strokes!

We really felt that the enemy was coming in like a flood but praise God, we knew that the gates of hell could not prevail against us. We also felt that it was time for God to show Himself strong. Every time they did a test on Eugene, there seemed to be more parts of his body being affected. 

Eugene was now more alert and could talk more cohesively. By now, he was just sick of all the tests and more bad news about his condition. So, he told the consultant the he wanted to go home. We were told that it was a "preposterous" decision, and that without medical support and antibiotics, Eugene would not survive. I guess the hospital staff felt that we did not realise the seriousness of Eugene's condition. 

The most bizarre thing happened next. The hospital took a 24-hour injunction on Eugene which meant that he could not leave the hospital for the next 24 hours. During that time, the hospital submitted for a court order to appoint a public guardian for Eugene to decide for him whether he should leave the hospital or not. 

The hospital did this because they felt that the three strokes were severe enough to impair Eugene's judgment and he was not able to make rational decisions for himself. Hence, he needed someone to make the decision for him. So it was submitted that either Eugene's dad, myself or someone from the Public Advocate's office be Eugene's guardian. The court appointed a Public Advocate, whom we have never met, and who did not know anything about Eugene to make decisions for him.

That night, I went home with a real burden to pray that the Lord would somehow speak to the guardian, and this person would be used as an instrument for the Lord's plans and purposes to be accomplished. We were scheduled to meet the following afternoon. 

This time, I felt the Lord prompting me on two Scriptures. 

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways, My ways," says the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Is 55:8)

I cried out to the Lord, saying, "Lord, I know that indeed my thoughts are not Your thoughts BUT indeed I want you only to be glorified in all this. If it is Your desire to take Eugene, how are you going to be glorified in all this? Yet, Lord, You have spoken and even as You have said that Your ways are not my ways, then have Your way, Lord. Do not let it be my way." 

Then came the second verse: 

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death." (Rev 12:11)

I knew straightaway that the Lord was asking whether I was willing to lay Eugene down so that He would have His way. What a turmoil. Yet I knew that I had to. In order to have the victory, there was a price to be paid, and if we had to pay the price in this way, then - so be it, Lord. 

I knew that we were fighting a battle beyond that of Eugene's healing. We were also in warfare for the church and for our city as we had been crying out to God to move among us for so long. 

The next morning, I only told mum about these verses. Then mum had a word:

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the LORD shall hold them in derision. (Ps 2:4)

We just felt that the Lord absolutely had everything in control and indeed, He was even laughing in heaven. With that assurance, we prayed as a family and then I went to the hospital. I prayed with Eugene and shared the verses with him. 

He asked me, "You mean that you would rather have me die so that God can move in His way and be glorified?" What an unfair question!!

I replied that I would rather him die and God be glorified than for God to share His glory with man. The only way for us to overcome the evil one was for us not to love our lives to the death. If Eugene was more afraid to die than eager to see God glorified, then he could not say that he did not love his life to the death. 

This was a real difficult time as we spent the next few moments releasing each other to the Lord and imploring the Lord to truly have His way which is far higher than our ways. 

After that, Eugene broke into laughter. He said, "I see it now. I have been so blinded." He was laughing so loudly that I had to shut his mouth. I thought that if the hospital already thought Eugene was not competent enough to make his own decisions, now they would think he had gone delirious and hysterical. 

So we met up with Eugene's guardian and some of the hospital staff to discuss the predicament. After that, the guardian asked to have time alone with the hospital staff. I called mum from the hospital as she was home with the children and I asked her to pray because the decision was being made. She said not to worry as God has everything in the palm of His hands, and God is always victorious.

Finally, after two hours - which seemed like eternity - we were told that Eugene could leave. Of course, against medical advice and we were very welcome to bring him back BUT with the view of having surgery. There was nothing else the hospital could do as the bacterial vegetation had grown to 3cm (another test had been conducted in the morning), which was an indication that the antibiotics were not having an effect. 

I believe that the Lord allowed this in order to confound the hospital staff because, every time we said that it was God and our prayers that were keeping Eugene alive, they said that it was the antibiotics that were keeping Eugene alive. Hence, I believe that the Lord allowed the vegetation to grow just to show that He would be the one to sovereignly heal Eugene. 

Also, because the vegetation was growing, and they had not determined exactly what bacteria was attacking Eugene's heart valve, the only thing that could be done medically was surgery. Even if Eugene were to continue being on life support, without surgery, he would only have two weeks left to live. So SURGERY WAS THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT EUGENE ALIVE. By now there was only a 60% chance of surviving the surgery. In the midst of doing the paper work to discharge Eugene, we were told repeatedly by different staff members that without the medical care and antibiotics, Eugene would die very quickly, perhaps even that very night.

Praise God, it was such a relief to have Eugene in the car. I thought of bringing Eugene straight home BUT he said he wanted to attend the Jesus Heals meeting - it was the second night of the meetings - because after all, he was supposed to be there leading worship. I was amazed at his courage and strength, but I had to ask him again just to be sure that I had heard the right thing. 

So off to Jesus Heals we went, and so many of our friends were so shocked to see Eugene. In fact, a number of them were so shocked that it took them a while to be able to talk about Eugene's situation. This night, 22/02/02, was indeed the beginning of Eugene's miraculous healing. I truly thank God that indeed He is not only our Creator, but He is also our Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord our Healer. 

We have not often seen the Lord heal, divinely and miraculously, in the Western World because, I believe, we have put too much faith in medicine. In the Third World countries, people are healed instantly because they have no other choice, no other hope BUT JESUS. We in the Western World have too many choices and have allowed ourselves to be deviated from the true and only source of healing. One that is without any side effects and is free. 

I pray that Eugene's testimony will encourage the believer and the non-believer to trust God 100%. God does not pick and chose who He wants to heal. God will heal if we do not waver or doubt Him. 

Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:2b,3)

Let us not ask amiss anymore. Let us pray believing that God can and will heal. Are we willing to release our lives or our loved ones into the hands of the God Who made and created us, or into medicine with all its humanistic values?

I praise God for the unceasing prayers of the saints that were offered up to God on behalf of Eugene. I believe that it was not only the round-the-clock prayers BUT more importantly, the "act of faith" - taking Eugene out of the hospital against all odds - and placing him completely in the hands of God. I now see that this it the 'faith working together with his works' as mentioned in James 2:22.

What does it profit, my brethren if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God.

You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. (James 2:14, 17, 21 - 24)

But without faith, it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6a)

I believe God is calling His saints to trust in HIM completely, to the point of foolishness in the eyes of man. I praise God that because of the 'foolish' act of discharging Eugene, he is still alive - not only two weeks later without surgery, but at the time of this writing, five months down the track. 

We are so thrilled to hear of the other 'foolish' acts being done because of the faith that they received from hearing Eugene's testimony. God is getting all the glory because these people are being healed and many are becoming living testimonies of His healing power. 

I believe that God is challenging more and more to trust Him 100%. It is one thing to say we trust Him, but after this experience, I can really see that God honours those who trust Him totally and completely. God desires that we put our 100% trust in Him. Then He can move mightily without the limitations and inhibitions of man. I strongly encourage everyone reading this not to choose God only when there is no other hope. Why leave it till so late? Why not trust Him from the very offset?

I praise God for the strength and wisdom that only God could have given me during this time. I had to be strong for the children, and I felt the best way was to keep their routine - daily activities - going. Looking back now, I know that indeed my help (and especially) strength comes from the Lord Who made the heavens and the earth (Ps 121:1, 2). 

Indeed, He took me on eagle's wings. I was fasting, praying, running around up and down for two whole weeks, yet I did not feel weary or exhausted. The Lord truly not alone brought healing to Eugene, but gave us all the strength and perseverance to go through this. 

Praise be to our Lord God Almighty. Indeed, He is our all-in-all !!!
